Compassionate Touch
As human beings, our most common responses to sensation that we're uncomfortable with - physical or emotional- is to resist it/turn away from it, or be harsh towards it or ourselves. What if there was a another way?
Next time you're noticing an area of "discomfort/pain" whether that's the physical or emotional sensation in the body, I invite you to:
- extend your hands towards it in a gesture of kindness and support, almost as if you are placing your hand to soothe a young child or loved one
- feel the warmth emanating from the palm of your hand to that part of the body - feel the body softening underneath the caress of your palm
- stay here for 30 seconds continuing to focus on the balance between extending kindness through the hand, and body part softening underneath
You might find that the sensations that were previously causing your discomfort or fear, dissipate just a little.
