Extraction or no extraction?
We asked Maija (our resident skin care therapist) why no extractions and what do you recommend/do instead?
Maija Answers:
Firstly let's explore the difference between what Estheticians typically extract.
Whiteheads (aka pustules) are closed blemishes that are a mixture of oil, dead skin cells, debris and bacteria. Extractions can be painful and run the risk of infection, scarring and can even rupture capillaries.
Blackheads are called open comedones, they are a plug of sebum in hair follicle, darkened by oxidation. One major misconception Maija hears all the time is clients thinking those black dots on the nose are blackheads when most likely they are sebaceous filaments. Clearing a nose of sebaceous filaments may look satisfying but it is extremely temporary and they will always come back. This is because they are not actually clogged, they are producing sebum and that is what they are supposed to do and contribute to the skin's protective acid mantle. They may also be found in the t zone area.
So what does Maija recommend/do instead of extractions?
Maija opts for double oil cleansing followed by a thorough facial massage, lots of warm towels and a hydrojelly algae mask to gently and safely clean out the pores while also stimulating stagnant lymph to get you glowing. Anything that is ready to go, will do so during her treatments. She also recommends hydrocolloid pimple patches for home use, the pimple patch will absorb the fluids from your pimple while also protecting the wound and keep your skin intact so you are far less likely to scar. You may just leave with one on :)
Maija will also discuss your current skin care regime and recommends using a cleanser that will help balance your oil production and keep your skin clear and hydrated.
